ABOUT DEREK

Dr Derek Redmond OLY is renowned for one of the most powerful moments in Olympic history, when he finished his 400m semi-final at the 1992 Barcelona Games with his father’s help after tearing his hamstring. That act of resolve officially made him a global symbol of resilience, human spirit, and dignity under pressure, later recognised by the International Olympic Committee and featured in global Olympic campaigns.

Dr Derek Redmond OLY is one of Britain’s most recognisable Olympians and a globally respected motivational speaker whose story of resilience has inspired audiences for more than three decades. Born in Bletchley, Buckinghamshire and educated at Roade School in Northamptonshire, where a sports hall now bears his name, Derek rose to prominence as one of the country’s leading 400-metre runners during the 1980s and early 1990s.

His athletics career began with national success, winning silver at the 1985 AAA Championships before breaking the British 400m record that same year with a time of 44.82 seconds. Derek continued to dominate the event throughout the decade, reclaiming the British record in 1987 with a time of 44.50 seconds and earning further medals at the national level. On the international stage, he played a key role in Britain’s success in the 4x400m relay, becoming European Champion at the 1986 European Athletics Championships alongside Kriss Akabusi, Brian Whittle and Roger Black.

Derek cemented his place in athletics history at the 1991 World Athletics Championships. Competing with Roger Black, John Regis and Kriss Akabusi, the British relay team shocked the heavily favoured American squad with a dramatic last-minute tactical change. Their winning time of 2:57.53 made them World Champions and, at the time, recorded the second-fastest 4x400m relay in history.

Despite eight operations across his career, Derek remained one of Britain’s most determined athletes. At the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, he posted the fastest time in the opening round and won his quarter-final. In the semi-final, tragedy struck when his hamstring tore with 250 metres remaining. Refusing to quit, Derek attempted to finish the race on one leg. His father famously broke through security to support him to the finish line as 65,000 spectators rose in a standing ovation. The moment later became the centrepiece of the International Olympic Committee’s “Celebrate Humanity” campaign and has since been viewed more than 500 million times worldwide, widely regarded as one of the most inspirational moments in Olympic history.

Two years later, Derek was told he would never run again. Rather than stepping away from sport, he reinvented himself as a multi-disciplinary athlete. He represented England in basketball and played professionally for the Birmingham Bullets, competed in professional Rugby Sevens, became a national kickboxing champion, a national motorcycle endurance champion and later an undefeated semi-professional boxer in his 50s. Even today, he continues to compete, representing Great Britain’s Over-55 Men’s Basketball Team. He also regularly plays golf, having competed in the Farmfoods British Par 3 and the European Senior Masters tournaments.

Derek Redmond discovered his passion for motorsport in 2006, when he fulfilled a lifelong ambition to learn to ride a motorcycle. What began as a personal interest quickly developed into another competitive pursuit, reflecting the same determination that defined his athletic career.

He went on to found Derek Redmond Racing and competed in the Hottrax Endurance Series, one of the UK’s leading motorcycle endurance racing championships. Endurance racing demands exceptional focus, physical stamina and teamwork, with riders competing for extended periods while maintaining speed and precision under intense pressure.

Derek also co-created the Spitlash Redmond and RG Moto racing teams, contributing to the development of competitive race programmes and supporting riders within the motorsport community. His involvement in motorcycle racing further demonstrated his ability to adapt to new challenges, build high-performance teams and pursue excellence beyond the track.

Derek has also contributed to the development of elite athletics in the UK, serving as Director of Development for Sprint and Hurdles for UK Athletics, helping to nurture the next generation of British track talent. Alongside sport, Derek built a successful media and business career. He has worked as a commentator for Eurosport, appeared in Visa’s global Olympic advertising campaign and featured on television, including Celebrity Gladiators and Channel 4’s The Greatest Auction. He has also held senior leadership roles in business, including Group Performance Director at Thomas International and previously CEO of Olympex. Derek is also the bestselling author of Sports Is A Business and Business Is A Sport, sharing lessons on performance and leadership drawn from sport and business.

Today, he is widely recognised as a world-class motivational speaker, ranked in the Global Gurus Top 100 Motivational Speakers and having delivered more than 1,000 keynote speeches worldwide. His talks focus on resilience, leadership, teamwork, high performance and overcoming adversity, drawing directly from his experiences in elite sport and personal challenge.
