At the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, Derek Redmond lined up for the 400m semi-final as a genuine medal contender. Years of training had led to that moment, and mid-race, Derek’s hamstring tore. He did not stop. He slowed, but kept moving down the track, determined to finish the race. As the stadium quietened, Derek’s father fought past officials and, side-by-side, finished the race.

At the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo, the American team were clear favourites for the 4 x 400m relay. Few expected Great Britain to challenge them, but Roger Black, John Regis, Kriss Akabusi and Derek delivered one of the greatest upsets in athletics history. Derek ran a fearless second leg of the relay, and together the team delivered a commanding performance. The quartet won the 4 x 400m relay, which at the time was the second-fastest 4 x 400m relay ever recorded.
