I recently delivered a keynote speech for Streets Chartered Accountants, using the lessons I developed as an Olympic athlete to help their people think differently about resilience, teamwork, leadership, high performance and business growth.

Why Did Streets Chartered Accountants Invite Me to Speak?
Streets invited me to share the principles of elite performance and explain how they can be applied to a growing business. Competing at Olympic level taught me that success depends on far more than talent. You need clear goals, disciplined preparation, strong support around you and the ability to adapt when circumstances change.
Those same principles apply in business. As an organisation grows, expectations increase, leadership responsibilities evolve, and teams need to stay focused on a shared objective. My keynote was designed to help Streets’ people think about how they approach those challenges and how the mindset developed in elite sport can support sustainable business performance.
What Did I Speak About for Streets?
My keynote focused on the mindset and behaviours that help individuals and teams perform under pressure and continue moving forward through change. I spoke about resilience, teamwork, preparation, goal setting, maintaining focus and responding constructively when things do not go to plan.
My experience at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games is a major part of my story, but the lesson I share with businesses goes much further than one race. Resilience is also about how you prepare, how you respond and how quickly you can refocus on what comes next.
For a growing organisation such as Streets, these principles are highly relevant. Expansion creates new opportunities, but it also requires people to adapt while maintaining the standards and values that contributed to the organisation’s success in the first place.

For me, one of the strongest connections between elite sport and business is that sustained performance comes from consistent improvement. As an athlete, I had to set goals, measure progress, learn from setbacks and keep adapting. Growing businesses face many of the same demands.
