Derek’s father Jim to carry the Olympic torch

Derek’s father Jim to carry the Olympic torch

DEREK REDMOND’S dad Jim has been chosen to carry the Olympic torch — 20 years after helping his injured son cross the finishing line at the Barcelona Games.

Redmond Snr famously jumped from the stands to assist his tearful, hobbling son as Derek tore a hamstring in the 400m semi-final.

Jim recalled: “During the first 100 metres we thought he’d finish in the first three.

“Then his leg went but, Derek being Derek, he would never give up.

“I don’t know why but I had an instinct I had to go over to him.

“We finished the race jointly. I didn’t realise 20 years later it would still be talked about.

“I’m delighted, honoured and very, very proud. Derek is very happy I was chosen. It means he is still recognised too.”

Jim will be one of the British Olympic Association’s 250 torch- bearers for the relay that starts on

May 19 and ends at the London 2012 opening ceremony on July 27.

BOA chief executive Andy Hunt, who selected Redmond, said: “It was a truly iconic moment. It represented what the Olympic spirit was about.”
