Grace is a chip off the old block

IT looks like there’s another Redmond in town threatening to steal her dad’s crown!

Grace Redmond is quickly becoming one of the UK’s most promising young athletes

Grace Redmond, Derek’s 15-year-old daughter, is one of the UK’s up and coming athletics stars.

The teenager recently competed for Wiltshire Schools in the English Schools Championships which took place in Birmingham.

Grace went into the Under 17 300m hurdles ranked sixth in the country, and arrived at the championships with high hopes of reaching the final.

Finishing third in her heat she sailed through to Friday afternoon’s finals where she excelled herself, finishing in second place and smashing her personal best by three seconds.

As a result, Grace has now qualified to compete for England for the first time at the end of this month in Dublin, where she will battle it out against Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

And as a surprise twist, Derek had been invited to present the medals which meant he was able to present the silver to his daughter – an emotional moment for the star.

“It was brilliant being there to watch Grace in action, but to then be the man who presented the medals was very special indeed,” said Derek Redmond.

“I was very proud. Grace is looking as if she can be a top athlete if this is the route she wishes to take and she has all of our support along the way.

“Seeing her finish second was incredible. She clearly has her dad’s genes – let’s just hope she doesn’t have his hamstrings!”
