Derek advises on how to cope with injuries in Athletics Weekly

Derek Redmond has recently had another article published in the world’s only weekly athletics magazine, Athletics Weekly. Writing from his own experience, Derek describes the ways he dealt with the injuries suffered during his career and offers advice for others who find themselves in the same position.

Most famously, Derek suffered a hamstring injury at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona but finished the race with the assistance of his father.

He explained the frustration that many athletes feel, saying “Once you suffer an injury, your first thought is likely to be “why me?” This feeling can last anything from minutes to hours to days and it can sometimes feel like you are the only person in the world who is going through this.”

“When you are pushing your body as hard as you can, injuries are inevitably going to happen so know that you’re not alone. I used to wish that I could pause the whole athletics world until I returned, but of course, you have to accept that it will all go on without you.”
