Derek receives International Fair Play Award

Derek Redmond has been recognised for the fantastic sportsmanship he consistently displayed throughout his career and beyond. On Wednesday 1st July, he was presented with the prestigious International Fair Play Mecenate Award 2015 in Italy.

Following in the footsteps of renowned figures such as Lord Sebastian Coe, Edwin Moses and Giovanni Benvenuti, Derek was honoured to be recognised for his ethical and fair play behaviour. This truly reflects the admiration and respect the sporting community has for Derek, and further cements his status as a role model for the younger generations.

Founded in 1997, the Fair Play initiative was created with the aim of growing and setting an idea of sport that promotes the respect of people, non-discrimination, good competition, non-violence and the fight against doping. The great personalities of sport receive the award, and the aim of the collateral meetings, such as the one attended by Derek, is to make young people aware of fair sport that is without doping, racism and violence.

Derek said, “I feel truly honoured to be presented with such a prestigious award. To be recognised by the sporting community in this way is something I am extremely proud of. Fair Play is always crucially important in athletics and, of course, in sport in general, but it has come sharply back into focus recently, so it is great that the ideal is upheld by awards such as this. I hope I can inspire the next generation in just a small fraction of the way some of the other recipients of the award have managed”.

Derek’s remarkable sense of determination and courage was during the 1992 Olympic 400m semi-final in Barcelona when, having suffered a torn hamstring, he refused to accept defeat and crossed the finish line on the arm of his father. In that one moment that has since been immortalised in sporting history, Redmond embodied the true values of fair play and sportsmanship: respecting the rules, his rivals and the officials, as well as honouring the achievements of those who had triumphed.
